About our book studio

Founded in Québec City, The Book Loom has spent seven years helping authors craft, polish and publish stories that matter. Here is who we are and why we do what we do.

Our story

The Book Loom was born in 2018 out of a small apartment in Québec City's Saint-Roch neighbourhood. Founder Élise Tremblay had spent twelve years working as a senior editor at one of Canada's largest publishing houses, and she noticed a growing gap in the market: independent authors and small presses needed the same calibre of editorial and design support that major publishers enjoyed, but at accessible price points and with a far more personal touch.

Élise partnered with graphic designer Jonas Hartley and publishing strategist Amara Osei to create a studio that could offer the full spectrum of book services under one roof. What started as a three-person operation quickly grew as word spread through writing communities across Canada and beyond. By 2021, the team had expanded to include seven full-time editors, three designers and two dedicated publishing consultants.

Today, The Book Loom has helped over 480 authors bring their manuscripts to market. We have worked on debut novels, academic monographs, children's picture books, poetry collections and sweeping fantasy epics. Regardless of genre or scope, every project receives the same careful attention and collaborative spirit that defined our very first engagement.

Our name reflects our philosophy: just as a loom interlaces individual threads into a cohesive fabric, we weave together editing, design, formatting and strategy to produce a finished book that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Every thread matters, and so does every word.

Mission and values

Our mission is simple: to empower every author with the professional tools, guidance and craftsmanship needed to publish a book they are truly proud of. These core values guide every decision we make.

Craft over speed

We never rush a manuscript through a production line. Every book receives the time it needs. Our editors read deeply, reflect thoughtfully and provide feedback that is both honest and constructive. Quality is non-negotiable, and we would rather extend a timeline than compromise on the integrity of your work.

Author-centred collaboration

Your voice is sacred. We do not impose our preferences on your prose; instead, we listen carefully to your vision and help you realise it more effectively. Every suggestion we make is in service of your story, your style and your audience. The final decision always rests with you.

Transparent pricing

Hidden fees erode trust. We provide detailed, itemised quotes before any work begins, and we never add surprise charges mid-project. If the scope changes, we discuss it openly and agree on revised terms together. Our pricing page is public because we believe in honesty at every step.

Inclusive storytelling

We believe every voice deserves to be heard. We actively seek to work with authors from diverse backgrounds, genres and perspectives. Our sensitivity readers and cultural consultants ensure that representation in your book is authentic, respectful and enriching for all readers.

Work with us

How we work

Our proven four-phase process ensures clarity, consistency and outstanding results on every project.

Editor marking up a manuscript with a red pen

Phase one — Discovery. Every engagement begins with a detailed conversation. We learn about your manuscript, your goals, your target readership and your timeline. This allows us to assemble the right team and create a customised project plan that aligns with your vision and budget.

Phase two — Editorial. Depending on the services you select, your manuscript moves through developmental editing, copy editing and proofreading in sequence. At each stage, you receive a marked-up document along with a detailed editorial letter explaining our recommendations. You have full control over which changes to accept.

Phase three — Design and production. Once the text is finalised, our designers create your cover and interior layout. You receive multiple concept options and unlimited revisions until the design feels perfect. We then produce print-ready PDF files, reflowable ePub and Kindle-compatible formats as needed.

Phase four — Launch support. Publication day is just the beginning. We help you set up distribution through major retailers, craft your author platform, prepare marketing materials and plan a launch strategy that generates early reviews and sustained visibility. Our goal is to ensure your book reaches the readers who need it most.

Throughout every phase, you have a dedicated project coordinator as your single point of contact. Communication is transparent, timelines are respected, and your satisfaction is guaranteed. If you are not happy with a deliverable, we revise it at no additional cost until it meets your expectations.
